Wrinkles are part and parcel of ageing but that does not mean that we are helpless in slowing down this ageing process.  As much as they are commonly associated with age, wrinkles can also occur to people as early as in their 30s.

But why do wrinkles occur in the first place?

The formation of wrinkles are usually multi-factorial:

  • Ageing
  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Muscle movement
  • Gravity

Additionally, we also need to understand that there are generally 2 broad classes of wrinkles:

  • Dynamic wrinkles:  Wrinkles that occur with facial movement
  • Static wrinkles:  Wrinkles that are seen even at rest or without facial muscle movement

Dynamic Wrinkles

Static Wrinkles

With repetitive facial muscle movement (such as in some people who frown unknowingly whilst they speak), dynamic wrinkles may quickly proceed to become static wrinkles.

Also, the loss of elasticity, hydration and compliant collagen in the skin also contributes to the formation of wrinkles.

With a basic knowledge on the formation of wrinkles at hand, we can now revisit the common factors that causes wrinkles and see what options are available to address them.

1)  The Ageing Skin

Solution:  Radiofrequency and High Intensity Focused Ultrasound energy can be used to stimulate the growth of new collagen to plump the skin up and improve wrinkles.

2)  Sun exposure

Solution:  Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!  Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and reapply every 3-4 hours if under direct sun exposure.

3)Smoking

Solution:  STOP Smoking !

4)  Muscle movement/ Dynamic wrinkles:

Solution:  Botox

5)  Static wrinkles

Solution:  Fillers

6)  Eat healthy, hydrate, moisturize and get enough rest!
