Why should you treat pigmentation early?
Treating pigmentation early can be beneficial for several reasons:
1. PREVENTING PROGRESSION
Some types of pigmentation, such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, can worsen over time if not managed promptly. Early treatment can prevent further darkening or spreading of pigmented areas.
2. EASIER TO MANAGE
Pigmentation that is addressed early is often easier to manage and may respond better to treatment. It may require less aggressive interventions compared to longstanding or severe pigmentation.
3. IMPROVED OUTCOMES
Addressing pigmentation early can lead to better outcomes. Treating pigmented areas before they become deeply entrenched can result in clearer, more even-toned skin.
4. BOOSTING SELF-CONFIDENCE
Treating pigmentation early and seeing visible improvements can boost self-confidence and overall well-being.
5. REDUCING LONG-TERM DAMAGE
In some cases, pigmentation can be associated with underlying skin conditions or sun damage. Treating pigmentation early may help prevent long-term damage to the skin.
6. AVOIDING COMPLICATIONS
Certain types of pigmentation, such as those related to hormonal changes or underlying medical conditions, may benefit from early identification and treatment to avoid potential complications or worsening of symptoms.
What Causes Pigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation often results from an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, which is produced by cells known as melanocytes. Various conditions or factors can influence melanin production in the body.
UV exposure is another common cause of hyperpigmentation, as it stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin in response to sun damage.
Some medications, including certain chemotherapy drugs, are known to cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect.
Additionally, hormonal changes during pregnancy can impact melanin production in some women, leading to hyperpigmentation.
How does M-Aesthetic Clinic treat Pigmentation differently?
1. Identification: At M-Aesthetic Clinic, our initial step in addressing pigmentation is to accurately identify the specific type of pigmentation each client presents with.
Recognising that different types of pigmentation, such as melasma, sunspots, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, require distinct approaches, we tailor the treatment intensity and methods accordingly.
2. Combination Therapy: Once the type of pigmentation has been accurately identified, our treatment strategy involves a combination of therapies. This approach is customised based on the severity and nature of the pigmentation.
Types of pigmentation
Why One-Size-Fits-All Doesn’t Work:
Sun Spots
Age spots / sun spots are pigment arising from skin damage due to age and exposure to UV rays. These can appear anywhere on the body but typically occur on sun-exposed parts of the body such as the face, chest and hands.
Treatment typically include pigment specific lasers such as ND YAG lasers, QSwitch Lasers, 1064 nm Lasers etc.
Here at M-Aesthetic Clinic, the pigment lasers that we use are the Pico Lasers, Q Switch Lasers, Spectra XT Laser, Thulium BB Laser.
Melasma
This is a very common condition that typically affects Asian females. It’s also known as chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy”. This condition is much more common in women than in men.
Although there is no exact cause found, it is thought that several factors may predispose a person to develop this condition.
These include:
-Genetics
-Exposure to UV rays
-Low thyroid hormone levels
-Hormonal (this is especially so because it typically involves women at and around pregnancy, post-pregnancy, peri-menopausal and in younger women when they are on contraceptives)
Do note that men can also develop melasma, though it is more uncommon as compared to women.
Our pigmentation specialists have a special interest in conducting laser pigmentation removal for this problem and are very knowledgeable about the different approaches to the treatment.
Freckles
Freckles usually consist of pigments that are located superficially in the skin. They have a genetic component to it and occur in individuals at a young age. They are very sensitive to UV rays and many individuals see their freckles lighten in Winter (when there is less sunlight) and typically they get darker in the Summer when exposure to the sun is more abundant.
In sunny Singapore where it is literally Summer all year round, using a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is essential to prevent freckles from getting darker.
Freckles are very treatable with pigmentation removal procedures and are primarily done so via pigment specific lasers.
There are many pigment specific lasers such as Q-Switch Lasers, ND YAG lasers, 1064 nm Lasers etc but the ones that are employed in our clinic are the Pico Lasers, Q Switch Lasers, Spectra XT Laser, Thulium BB Laser.
Hori’s Naevus
Hori’s Naevus is a condition whereby the pigment is located deeper in the skin. Causes include a family history/ genetics as well as a relation to hormones. It typically occurs on the cheeks and appears greyish-brown in colour.
Treatment is usually via our pigment specific Pico Laser and Q-switch laser and may require multiple sessions.
Naevus of Ota
This is a pigmentary condition that is usually present at birth. It occurs on one side of the face and can be quite extensive in some people ie. occupying half of the face. It may also affect parts of the eye such as the sclera (whites of the eye), cornea and iris. The pigment is situated deep in the skin and gives it a blue-ish, green-ish, grey and brown appearance.
Treatment is via Pico Lasers and Q Switch Lasers and will require subsequent sessions.
Besides medical Lasers backed by years of research, we do have other proprietary lightening treatments be it well researched lightening creams, lightening oral tablets amongst others.
Our doctors will assess your skin before recommending the best course of treatment for your pigment woes.

Pigmentation Lightening Laser
$108, 1st session
The Pigmentation lightening laser system is designed to address a variety of skin concerns, including pigmentation issues.
It utilises its technology to target and treat pigmented lesions effectively. This non-invasive laser treatment has gained popularity for its precision and ability to provide remarkable results with minimal discomfort and downtime.
How does it treat pigmentation?
It employs a unique two-step process to target pigmented lesions. In the first step, the laser emits a specific wavelength of light that is selectively absorbed by the pigmented cells.
This energy heats and shatters the pigments, breaking them down into smaller particles. In the second step, the body’s natural healing processes work to eliminate these fragmented pigments, resulting in a clearer and more even complexion over time.
Benefits & Advantages
- Versatility: Addresses various pigmented lesions including sunspots, melasma, freckles, and age spots.
- Targeted Approach: Ensures only pigmented cells are affected, preserving surrounding healthy skin.
- Consistent and Gradual Results: Offers natural-looking improvement in skin appearance over time.
- Gentle and Well-Tolerated: Minimal discomfort during the procedure; suitable for most patients.
- Customisable Settings: Allows practitioners to tailor treatments to individual skin types and pigmentation issues.
- Minimal Downtime: Patients can quickly resume daily activities; gradual skin clearance and tone uniformity follow as the body eliminates broken-down pigments.
BB Thulium Laser
$300, 1st session
The BB Laser is a recent laser treatment that effectively targets facial pigment , brightens the skin and improves size of pores. In South Korea, many call it the BB Laser because of its ability to improve the texture and tone of the skin, just like when applying BB cream to the skin.
Waking up to clear #nofilter skin has always everyone’s dream. BB Laser will produce results replicating the look of BB cream –BRIGHTER/ FAIRER, more RADIANT, SMOOTHER skin – without any makeup required.
How does it work?
Thulium BB Laser is a sub-ablative Thulium 1927nm laser for skin resurfacing and rejuvenating. The laser’s wavelength penetrates to a level between the lower part of the epidermis and dermis where it is able to target and treat melasma, freckles, sunspots and age spots while renewing damaged skin and stimulating collagen production.
The wavelength penetrates the upper dermis while not causing the upper layer to peel.
What kind of improvement can I expect to see with this treatment?
- Skin brightening/ Fairer skin
- Smoother, younger looking skin
- Pore tightening
- Improvement in pigmentation
- Overall improvement in skin texture and tone
- Improvement in fine wrinkles
Microneedle Radiofrequency
$850, 1st session
Microneedling RF is also effective in treating stubborn melasma. Melasma is not only a problem of excess melanin production but also contributes to various other skin issues, including abnormal blood vessels, inflammation, and a weakened basement membrane.
This treatment addresses multiple aspects – it breaks down melanin deposits from the surface to deep within the dermis, remodels abnormal blood vessels, and regenerates the foundational layers of the skin to inhibit further melanin formation.
How does it work?
Microneedling promotes skin rejuvenation by causing minor skin injuries that stimulate collagen production, resulting in younger, more radiant skin.
The Microneedling device uses targeted Red or Blue LED light to customize the treatment based on specific skin concerns. Red LED boosts collagen production, whereas Blue LED targets acne bacteria and aids in correcting pigmentation issues.
Benefits of the treatment include:-
- Reduces Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
- Treats Melasma
- Diminishes Wrinkles: Boosts collagen production for thicker, tighter, more elastic, and firmer skin (anti-ageing)
- Enhances Skin Brightness (skin brightening)
- Manages Acne and Decreases Breakouts
- Tightens Large Pores (skin tightening)
- Removes Acne Scars
- Rejuvenates Skin and Enhances Overall Skin Health (skin rejuvenation)
- Repairs Cell Membranes for Healthier Skin
