Causes of Acne Scars

Acne scars are formed due to damage to the skin from active Acne or pimple.  Inflammation from Acne injures and damages the skin and during the healing process, normal skin cells are replaced by scar cells which results in the formation of scars (be it depressed or hypertrophic).  

Typically, deep seated and prolonged inflammation from Acne or pimple carries a higher risk of Acne Scar formation, therefore, it is paramount to treat active Acne as soon as possible. 

 Is there a “one-size fits all” treatment for Acne Scars ?

For deeper / rolling scars, a more intense Micro-Needle Radiofrequency treatment can be used. This method of treatment is unique and highly effective for stubborn/ deep acne scars.

Gold-plated ultra-fine needles first smoothly penetrate the deep acne scars before emitting Radiofrequency energy to break up the scar tissue and stimulate collagen.

It is a great treatment for deep acne scars that requires deeper penetration of energy and a more intense approach.

Despite being more intensive, downtime is actually still kept to a MINIMAL!

 

What is the procedure like?

Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to ensure maximum comfort before the commencement of the procedure. It is a comfortable procedure that takes around 45 mins.

 

What can I expect after the procedure?

After the procedure, some redness is to be expected but will improve over the next few days. Usually only a residual pinkish redness is seen after a few days.

 

How often can this procedure be performed?

Microneedle Radiofrequency can be performed every 4 – 6 weeks.

 

How many sessions would I require?

You may already see results after the 1st session! However, subsequent sessions may be required to improve the results even more.

If you have had previous treatments done and feel that your acne scars are at a plateau, then this might be the treatment for you!

TCA cross

This is a technique where by very high concentration TCA acid is carefully applied to individual acne scars to “fill” up the depression and make the acne scar less depressed.This technique is especially useful in Ice-pick scars and some Box-car scars.

The number of sessions required will depend on the severity of the acne scars.

The concentration of acid used in this technique is very high and as such should only be administered by a medical professional to ensure maximum safety.

Treatment duration : 20-30 minutes

In certain cases, fillers can be used to fill up depressed scars to smoothen out the skin surface.

Numbing cream is first applied to the entry point of the area that is to be filled, and then the filler is administered via the entry point to raise the depressed scar.

The advantages of fillers are that effects are seen immediately, and MINIMAL to NO downtime is required.

Treatment duration : 15-20 minutes

This is a method whereby the scar tissue is manually released by using a needle to loosen the scar tissue beneath the skin. This method is sometimes essential in treating certain scar types and is commonly used in combination with other treatment modalities. The most appropriate combination will be advised by Dr Ho Rui Ming.

Subscision may look simple but it is a manual method that really requires good technique. When done correctly, it can yield effective results so be sure to seek a medical professional for this treatment.

 

How is the procedure performed?

First, an anaesthetic is administered to the area that is to be treated to ensure maximum comfort. Then, the scar is released by loosening the scar tissue beneath it via a needle.

The process takes around 30 mins, is comfortable and there is minimal downtime.

 

Is it painful?

This procedure may look and sound scary, but we have had customers actually fall asleep during this procedure! It is definitely a comfortable procedure.

Venus Viva machine
The Venus Viva is a Radiofrequency (RF) machine that utilises its Nanotechnology to effectively treat different scars with MINIMAL downtime as compared to the CO2 or Erbium laser treatment.

Multiple columns of RF energy are emitted into the scars to break the scar tissue up AND stimulate new collagen. This effectively evens out the scars and improves the texture of the scarred areas.Treatment is quick (about 30mins) and comfortable!

Some redness is to be expected for a few days but subsequently only a pinkish-redness will be seen.

A topical anaesthetic cream will first be applied to ensure comfort throughout the process. The Venus Viva RF probe will then be used to create micro-columns of heat within the layers of the skin. Some redness is expected but will subside, and once healed, the skin will have a more even and a smoother texture. Additionally, there is also a firming effect due to collagen remodelling.
